Volgens het Amerikaanse blad The Hollywood Reporter is Pixar-regisseur Andrew Stanton bezig aan een vervolg op Finding Nemo. De film zou verschijnen in 2016.
Op zich hoeft de keuze om net aan Finding Nemo een vervolg te breien, geen verrassing te zijn. De film staat op 5 in de lijst van meest opgebrachte animatiefilms aller tijden. Maar net dat is tegelijk een risico. Het vervolg op Pixar's Cars liet vorig jaar al de kassa's rinkelen, maar de film zelf kon op weinig bijval rekenen in de pers. Voor hen was de sequel er puur om de marketingmachine rond de figuren opnieuw aan te zwengelen.
Pixar heeft ook een succesvolle geschiedenis met vervolgverhalen. De Toy story-trilogie is telkenmale enthousiast onthaald. Binnenkort verschijnt er een vierde film, al zou dat een voor televisie bedoelde kerstfilm worden. Ook naar het volgend jaar te verschijnen Monsters University - een prequel op Monsters Inc - is het uitkijken. Daarna brengt Pixar terug twee originele verhalen uit: The Good Dinosaur in 2014 en de voorlopig titelloze film The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind in 2015. Daarna dus weer een vervolgverhaal met Nemo.
Het vervolg op Finding Nemo zou opnieuw geregisseerd worden door Andrew Stanton. Hij werkte al mee aan A bug's life, Monsters Inc en de Toy story-trilogie en regisseerde ook al Wall-E maar ook het jammerlijk geflopte Disney's John Carter. Over het verhaal van Finding Nemo 2 is nog niets geweten, ook niet over de stemmencast.
